OK the problem is with the server and not the code. there's a security setting somewhere that gets fussy when a plain-jane URL is inserted into a database.
i'm dicking around with the security settings in cpanel right now but haven't seen it yet. in the meantime, use hyperlinks, or cut off the http part, etc.
thanks a ton for the help.. i'll get to this eventually but may be a bit.
