Tom Carter & Marcia Bassett: Zaika ?Killer debut album from what looks to be a semi-regular unit featuring Tom Carter of Charalambides and Marcia Bassett of Double Leopards/Hototogisu/Un. It?s a hook-up that makes a lot of sense, as both Carter and Bassett?s signature guitar sound is based around shackling long, eternally-sustained notes with the kind of heavy gravity generated by the combination of E-Bow and feedback. But whereas Carter?s playing is as influenced as much by the revenant forms of early country/blues slide performers and associated folk-informed scorch, Bassett?s music is almost completely purged of traditional tongue, drawn instead from the unpredictable interaction of pure electricity. Zaika consists of four improvisations that vibrate in mid-air with all of the metallic threat of Double Leopards? epochal Halve Maen recording, but there?s something a little more frail and immediately human about the way the two players circle each other, with moments of what could be wildly contorted vocal from Bassett leading Carter into slow cartwheels of E-Bow and smouldering lines of overdriven tone. At other points Bassett?s droning guitar sets up a deep-field backdrop that gives Carter enough space to launch some of his most allusive orbits of form to date. The last track is a particular stand-out, a frail melodic improvisation that brings it all back home with the kind of beautifully destroyed rock moves that characterised both Charalambides and Un?s Siltbreeze-era recordings. LP is limited to only 500 copies ? most of which are already sold-out at source ? and comes in a beautiful full-colour silkscreen sleeve by our hero Alan Sherry at SIWA. Highest recommendation.?
